MISTERI OF TRAPANI Every Holy Friday, over four hundred years, Trapani renews the tradition of the Procession of the Holy Groups on the Way of Calvaries (known as “Via Crucis”), the "Mysteries". The procession, which winds through two miles of trail, involving thousands of citizens and tourists, who come from all over the world.
The "Mysteries" are twenty sculptures, made of canvas, wood and glue, representing the stages of the Passion and Death of Jesus. The statues, on a wooden base, are decorated with silver and floral arrangements and carried on shoulder along all over the route of the city with the characteristic "annacata", the movement that holders imprint following the music of the bands. The statues were created between the seventeenth and eighteenth century by local artists and are characterized by the deep expressiveness of the faces and the precision of the cuts. They are preserved throughout the year in the "Chiesa del Purgatorio" ("Church of Purgatory"), where they exit, at 2p.m. each Holy Friday, to make return at the end of the Procession, the morning of Holy Saturday. In the day of the Procession, Trapani changes its appearance in a fascinating mix of sacred and folklore, which has maintained its characteristics unchanged over the centuries.
