LANDING OF THE MADONNA OF CUSTONACI

The last Wednesday of August is the feast of the Madonna of Custonaci, patron saint of Custonaci, Erice, Valderice and all the agro Erice. The religious and folk celebrations begin a week before the last Wednesday in August. The festival provides various events in Erice and the procession in the narrow streets of the village, while in Custonaci, on Monday, after sunset, you can relive the historic commemoration of the arrival of the Sacred Image from the sea, the so-called "Landing of the Madonna", at the bay of Cala Buguto of Cornino.

The boat carrying the image is accompanied by many fishing boats, creating a sort of procession at sea. After the Madonna landed on the shore, an impressive display of fireworks from the sea marks the beginning of the torchlight procession. The Sacred Image, placed on a cart, is transported on shoulder to the shrine atop the hill of Custonaci. The festivities end on Wednesday with the procession of the Madonna on the streets of Custonaci.
